Green Smoothie Challenge Part 1 ~ the first week

September 25, 2011
Welcome to the first spring green smoothie challenge! For the next fourteen days I am posting a green smoothie on my facebook page and here I will track my progress and cover in more detail exactly how I go about it and what difficulties I face.
The first rule when taking on this challenge is variety! As always, I cant emphasis enough the importance of changing your fruit and green leafy vegetables on a daily basis. This ensures that you cover a wide range of nutrients and keep the taste buds happy. Now I understand that this can make things more expensive and requires a bit more thought when shopping but it is worth it. You can do it on a three day rotation eg if you had spinach on Monday then you can have it again on Thursday.
The next rule is to have fun with it! Look forward to combining different fruits and veggies and find your favorites. Push your boundaries :)
*For those of you in different season timeline around the world , you can still take part in a total body cleanse. In fact, its a good thing to do a cleanse 4 times a year, at the change of each season.

Day 1
  • 1 cup  frozen raspberries
  • 1 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1 apple
  • 3 big handfuls of baby spinach
  • 2 cups of water
First day and I’m pumped! looking forward to seeing some results. Of course I’m not good at doing things half measured so I’ve decided to give up coffee, alcohol and wheat as well!! Why you ask??? I really want to give my liver and good chance to regenerate and this will also help my immune system deal with the onslaught of allergen that occur at this time of year. Most of us eat way too much wheat and in actual fact many have intolerances and don’t even know it! I find removing wheat for a little while helps reduce bloating and helps with my hayfever. I also start the morning with the juice of  half a lemon in a glass of warm water (1/2 boiled and 1/2 cold water) to set the cleanse in motion.
Day 2

  • 1 cup fresh strawberries
  • 1 cup  green grapes
  • 1 pear
  • 2 large handfuls of baby kale leaves
  • 2 cups water

This juice was easy to drink and enjoyable. Not to say the kids would even dare try it. My youngest just sneaks out of kitchen and makes herself scarce till it’s time for school just in case I try and make her drink it. Ha! They don’t know what they’re missing. I’ve been for my morning walk and unlike yesterday, I feel a little hungry after this smoothie. Maybe its because of the raw food meal I ate last night.
Day 3
  • 1 cup pineapple
  • 1 cup watermelon
  • 1 kiwi fruit
  • 3-4 leaves of cos lettuce
  • 2 cups water

Oh I really enjoyed this one! The lettuce makes the green not so obvious and the flavour is light and tropical. Feeling great in the morning with loads of energy but a headaches returns late afternoon….not even craving coffee! Is seems caffeine is still being needy to my system even though I only have 1-2 a day.

Day 4

  • 1 cup rockmelon (cantaloupe)
  • 1 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1 apple
  • 1/2 beetroot (helps with blood cleansing and liver)
  • 3 big leaves of cabbage
  • 2 cups water

chose this combination to help the detoxing process, Beetroot is amazing as a all-rounder cleanser and it works a treat. I also added cabbage to help with any repair of the digestive tract. It contains Vitamin U which has been shown to regular gastric acid too.

Day 5
  • 1 cup watermelon
  • 1 cup seedless grapes
  • 1 cup frozen raspberries
  • 4-5 bok choy leaves, chopped
  • 2 cups water

I’m really enjoying my morning ritual now. Love finding new combinations. My mind is more alert and the headaches have stopped thank goodness! Only were happening in the afternoons but now nothing. Yay! Am feeling better, Im sure I’ve even lost weight. I’m making a point of eating more raw foods and of course organic all the way! This smoothie looks like a cafe latte in the picture but I can assure you it taste nothing like it!

Day 6

  • 2 pears
  • 2 kiwi fruits
  • 1 cup pineapple
  • 2 handfuls baby kale leaves
  • 2 cups water

This ones a ripper! Even my daughters gave it a go. It is sweet and as long as they didn’t look at it for too long, enjoyed it. Did my first try out at boot camp this morning, and boy am I sore! Hate to see what Im like in the morning!

Day 7

  • 1 cup watermelon
  • 1 cup fresh strawberries
  • 1 green apple
  • 3-4 Cos lettuce leaves
  • 2 cups waters

At the end of my first week and I’m feeling fabulous! (apart from the aching all over from the boot camp!) , It have help me with mood and feeling more energized. Looking forward to the next week to try and come up with new flavours to test.

I hope you have given this challenge a go. It doesn’t have to be the way I do it, even just  changing your morning routine to include these nutrient dense smoothies and continue to have your usual lunch and dinner should show some improvements to your health.

Good luck :)
